Samsung galaxy s7 iphone 7 comparison. Which is cooler - Samsung Galaxy S7 or A8? Battery and run time

Today we will try to compare two very interesting smartphones. Of course, these will be representatives of the two most important competitors on the market: iPhone 7/7 PLUS and samsung galaxy S7/S7 Edge.

Of course, you can say that there are two smartphones on each side, but their characteristics are very similar and therefore, we will just compare in general, but I will take into account all the points.

I know that the article comes out much later than it should be. But given that a lot of time has passed and all devices are still relevant, why not.

What is the difference between iPhone 7/7 PLUS and Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge?

As you understand, comparisons are usually not very equal, because companies release devices at completely different times of the year. In any case, someone is one step ahead.

Therefore, let's first compare all the characteristics in the table. Thus, you can understand the most important differences between these gadgets.

Approximately such differences can be observed in the overall picture in the table. But we do understand that each item must be considered separately.

Lately, the numbers don't always tell the truth. All you need to feel alive and understand the difference. What are we going to do now.

Difference between iPhone 7/7 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge

Let's start with the most interesting part. I will not go into the most detailed details. But after reading the article, you will understand the main difference.

Design

Although the iPhone 7 did not receive anything radically new in design, Apple managed to make a new device from the old 6S thanks to bug fixes.

The antennas now follow the contour of the case neatly, and the camera has become much nicer to look at thanks to the one-piece body. And this is perhaps all the main differences from the previous model in appearance.

There are three new color options and now you can still buy Red, Black (Matte) and Jet Black. Well, the old fashioned way you can find Gold, Rose Gold and Silver.

Samsung managed to do something new and fascinating. If the regular Galaxy S7 is very similar to its predecessor, the Edge was able to be very different thanks to the screen.

On the sides, the device has a rounded screen. I do not argue, it all looks very cool. But as practice shows, using the device is not as convenient as expected.

Very often, it is these side parts that react to accidental pressing and, of course, when playing games and watching videos, it is extremely inconvenient to hold the device.

The colors are completely different and we have "black diamond", "white pearl", "titanium silver" and "dazzling platinum".

It is difficult enough to say which design is better, because each user has their own ideals and point of view. Both are good in their own way and which is more beautiful, it's up to you.

Here I can add at the end that the iPhone has an aluminum case and in a couple of years it looks much nicer than the Galaxy S7.

The reason was the plastic speaker and the Menu button, which are simply erased after a while. However, the glass body is very good.

Screens

As you already know: the iPhone has 4.7 and 5.5 inches, and the Samsung has 5.1 and 5.5 inches. If the younger models are about the same, then regarding the larger options, we can say that Samsung 5.5 has more accurate ones.

Apple usually doesn't go after resolution, because they want to optimize everything perfectly and extend battery life. 1334x750 and 1920x1080 - though not enough, but so far users do not complain.

It can also be noted that they have the best IPS matrix on the market, which is slightly improved compared to the 6S.

Samsung is a little different and they have long felt confident in this regard. Super AMOLED has just incredible color reproduction.

2560x1440 is quite good for this size and in this regard you will feel very comfortable. Black color is really black, unlike IPS.

But to be honest, both screens are very High Quality and have everything you need for top-end devices. Again, color rendering is a matter of taste.

Batteries

And here the first point begins, which Apple cannot catch up with for quite a long period of time. Of course, these are batteries and everything connected with them.

Almost all devices show good performance in terms of the duration of work, except for the iPhone 7. Thanks to the thin body, only 1960 mAh were able to fit.

But this is not the most important thing. It takes 2 hours and 10 minutes to fully charge your iPhone 7. While for Samsung S7 it will only take 1 hour and 25 minutes.

All thanks to Quick Charge 2.0 technology, which they have been using for a long time. Also, just think for a second that 50 percent can be achieved in just half an hour.

I think it's clear who has the advantage here. If Apple does not do anything in the next generations, then I think we can see big changes.

Samsung's wireless charging has long been a little jealous. It's so annoying to use wires all the time.

Performance

As you understand, both devices are flagships and no matter what game or program you run, it will run without problems.

All thanks to the Apple A10 Fusion 4 quad-core processor on the iPhone and the Exynos 8890 or Snapdragon 820 on the Galaxy. Samsung supplies different processors for different markets, but there is not much difference in terms of power.

RAM iPhone 7/7 PLUS - 2 and 3 GB, Samsung Galaxy S7 - 4 GB. The numbers in all of this are impressive, and some people's computers aren't all that fun.

Also, as practice shows, the operating system plays a very important role. iOS always uses resources more rationally and thanks to this, you can observe stable operation.

Android has made a big push lately and is getting closer in optimization every day. iOS is still better, but I think in a year or two, it won't be as noticeable.

Audio

I also decided to talk separately about music, because Apple has always been in the first place. But if we compare the difference before and now, then the iPhone has long ceased to be top-end in this direction.

However, judging by the devices, there are quite a few differences. And for example, both iPhones have stereo speakers and lack a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Samsung still has a jack and there is only one speaker, which also sounds very good.

As for me, here I would prefer the iPhone. After all, stereo speakers are much more expensive than a jack and you want to watch videos and play games at the highest level.

Moreover, Bluetooth headphones are becoming cheaper and in a couple of years, we will probably remember the 3.5 connector as CDs.

Camera

Now we have come to the most interesting point, which is usually the most interesting when buying a new smartphone. After all, photographs have become a part of our lives for like 2 or 3 years.

main camera. For iPhone, we will take the plus model as an example, because it has a dual camera of 12 MP. The second is used for portrait mode and 2x optical zoom.

12 MP is also available from Samsung. They reduced the number of pixels in order to increase the size of the pixel, which now combines two LEDs instead of the usual one.

If anyone understands, then Samsung has an aperture of f / 1.7, and Apple has an aperture of f / 1.8. Which is very, very good for mobile phones.

Speaking about night shooting and in low light conditions, the winner can be safely called Samsung, which has a much clearer picture.

During the day, both devices cope quite well and here the difference is really not very big. Samsung wins a little, but not critically.

I remember the days when Apple was the best among mobile photography. Long gone are the days when they occupied top positions. Everything is pretty much on par right now.

Speaking briefly about video, Apple does a little better here and has optical image stabilization, 4K recording (30 fps) and the A10 Fusion co-processor - it is in both 7 and Plus versions.

Samsung also has optical stabilization capable of shooting in 4K. I think it's the lenses that make the difference.

Front-camera. Now let's touch on a topic that has been haunting for many years and this, of course, is a selfie that many people take several times a day.

The iPhone 7 has 7 MP which takes very accurate photos and you will be able to see all the fine details of your face.

The Samsung S7 only has 5MP, but it's wide-angle so you can capture a lot more detail in your photo.

Here already choose for yourself, the clarity of the picture or the wide angle. In reality, each option is for different occasions and for example, if you take pictures with several people, then Samsung will surely do better.

Chips

If earlier Apple dictated the rules of technology in the market entirely, now it happens only partially.

Let's quickly go over the main differences that I was able to notice:

  • Taptic Engine and 3D Touch (iPhone). You feel very pleasant responses of the smartphone, which no smartphone has yet. Just click on the icon and an additional menu appears.
  • Menu button. iPhone is equipped this time with a touch Home button, which makes the illusion of pressing thanks to Taptic Engine technology.
  • Sensor heart rate And wireless charger qi. All this you will not find in the iPhone. Galaxy is making great progress in this direction.
  • Flexible camera settings. The principle of the iPhone camera is quite simple - pointed and photographed. In Samsung, you can dig into the settings and do something very cool.
  • Moisture protection. Available in both devices and Samsung has IP68 (can be up to 30 minutes at a depth of up to 1.5 m).

Apple is a little worse in this regard and has an IP67 standard. 30 minutes underwater up to 1 meter deep.

It turned out a little vinaigrette, but I think I conveyed the essence of the rest of the chips and this is the main thing. As you can see, they are two completely different devices.

What is better than iPhone 7/7 PLUS and Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge?

So, for sure, many people came to read the material so that they could understand what kind of smartphone is better and which one to buy for themselves.

I have a question for your answer, so don't worry. In fact, the answer is very simple and you can immediately decide.

Approximately for such criteria, you should check yourself and then you will be able to understand everything:

  • Operating system. Whoever and what does not say about the easy transition from Android to iOS and vice versa, this is a very difficult matter. Not in the sense that it is impossible to do.

The logic of each OS is completely different, and for example, if you like more freedom in action, then this will probably be Android. iOS is simple: turn it on, install it, use it.

So if you have a big dilemma, then just ask yourself what is more convenient and familiar to you. Why torture yourself with something new, just for the sake of the changed appearance of the device.

  • Price. The year is 2017, and as you understand, the prices of both devices are far from equal. Already now you can find S7 at a price two times cheaper than at the start of sales.

This has not happened with the iPhone yet, and even older models cost a lot of money. And this applies to both used and new.

So if you have enough money for the Galaxy S7, then you can take it for yourself at a delicious price and use it for the next two years. The design and functions will be relevant for another two years for sure.

  • Camera. Given that mobile photography is developing at a crazy speed, I can safely say that this criterion is simply incredibly important when choosing.

When compared in general, the cameras do not have too much difference in quality. It really all depends on what exactly you would like.

For example, in Samsung we get better pictures due to the possibility of flexible settings. The device also performs well in automatic mode.

Apple has a second camera and it could be the key. A cool portrait mode that can blur the background is getting better every day.

Also, 2x optical zoom without loss of quality is also very impressive. If these two points are important to you, then you know what is better to buy.

I understand that there is no clear answer about the best device at all. After all, Samsung has long been crushing with its technology and screen.

Just read the points and choose which category you belong to. If the choice prevails on Samsung, then we take it without hesitation.

If Apple, then welcome to a new world where you don't have to worry too much about the choice and your next smartphone will be very obvious.

My point is that it's much more difficult for Android users to choose a device, because there are too many brands that constantly release completely different devices.

Apple is simple. You buy a model for which there is enough money and you already roughly understand that in the future the choice will be between two models at most: the top and last year's flagship.

Results

To be honest, the choice between such devices is always difficult to make. I hope my comparison iPhone devices 7/7 PLUS and Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge were able to make the big picture a little clearer.

It is very difficult to put all thoughts in one article and therefore, we get the following result.

To be honest, in the end I can say the principle that I would act on: we take the device that we like externally and it will not lag for the next 2-3 years.

On this moment we spend just a crazy amount of hours just sitting at the smartphone. We buy something that will please you with all the functions.

Until the launch of the Galaxy S8 Galaxy smartphones S7 and S7 Edge were the best flagships in Samsung's lineup. Most recently, the company introduced the flagship S8, which is already on sale and is in great demand. Even before the release and appearance on store shelves, it was sold out on pre-orders. Is it that good and what are the main differences from the Galaxy S7?

Competitors

There is a difference between these smartphones. In fact, the Galaxy S8 is a new generation device that is fundamentally different from the S7 in some ways. It is expected that it will have higher performance, better camera, display. Against the backdrop of these advantages, the difference in cost is fully justified.

Display

Both displays in phones with SuperAMOLED matrices, which are by far the best. Not only in line Samsung phones, but in general. Many manufacturers are trying to get it from Samsung, which is a kind of recognition of competitors.

The Galaxy S7 features a 5.1-inch screen with a huge QHD resolution and was the best in its category until the release of the Galaxy S8. In the bright sun, there are no glare or reflections, there is a large margin of brightness for adjustment. The screen is contrasty and saturated - everything is fine with this. There's even a polarizing filter, thanks to which the contents of the display can be seen under the glasses with polarization.

Galaxy S8 got a new display called Infinity Display. This term will be used for screens stretched vertically. If you use the S7, and then pick up the S8, you will get the impression that you have moved from a small monitor to a large plasma. At the same time, a high-quality matrix of the latest generation SuperAMOLED is used here. This technology, in principle, has remained the same - since the days of Samsung Note 7, but it has been improved. In particular, the algorithm for adjusting the brightness on the machine has become better, the Always On Display mode has also been improved. Who does not know what it is: Always On Display technology displays data on the lock screen: clock, date, missed calls or SMS. It could just be some pretty image. This is how it looks like:

The display resolution is simply amazing - QHD +, that is, 2960x1440. With a diagonal of 5.8 inches, this gives a pixel density of 570 dpi (in the Galaxy S8). The screen size of the S8+ is 6.2 inches, and there is a density of 529 dpi.

Renowned for its quality display research DisplayMate gave his assessment of the Galaxy S8 screen. There, experts felt that the company again managed to raise the bar and do the impossible. The English review is published on the official website of DispayMate. If you are friends with English, we recommend that you read it. Let's briefly summarize the main points that DispayMate experts point out:

  1. Unique screen image enhancement technology. That is, a non-HDR picture on the screen becomes an HDR image.
  2. The maximum brightness in automatic mode exceeds expectations - it reaches 1000 nits. Therefore, even in direct sunlight, the image and even text will be clearly visible on the display.
  3. Separate chip for AlwaysOn technology. According to DisplayMate, this allows you to achieve energy savings. Although earlier this technology"ate" only 1-2% of the battery.
  4. Not one, but two light sensors. Allows you to better determine the lighting conditions and, depending on this, the colors / brightness on the screen are adjusted.
  5. DCI-P3 Color gamut. In short: the colors are bright, juicy, realistic even in bright light.
  6. The smartphone "learns" and adjusts the screen brightness to the user's preferences (based on the user's previous settings).

These are far from all the points pointed out in DisplayMate. There are more of them, but we won’t list them all - it’s too much text to write.

Here is an example: the S8's screen next to the S7 Edge's display, which was color-perfect. But next to the S8, you can see that the white color looks yellowish.

Plus, you can change the resolution from HD+ to FHD+ and to WQHD+. Even at the highest resolution, the load on the battery remains small. The Galaxy S8 display sets the record for power consumption at this high resolution.

Conclusion: The display on the S8 and S8+ is revolutionary and unmatched today.

Performance

It is known that the S7 and S8 smartphones use Exynos 8890 and 8895 processors. These are chips of our own production. But both flagships can also use processors from Qualcomm - Snapdragon 820 and Snapdragon 835 in S7 and S8, respectively. True, models with processes from Qualcomm are almost impossible to find - this is an exceptional rarity. Exynos-powered flagships are available almost all over the world, and that's a good thing.

The Exynos 8890 processor in the flagship S7 is made using the 14nm FinFet process technology. It has 8 cores and MALI T880 MP12 coprocessor. Until the release of the S8, the Exynos 8890 processor was the best. It has high performance, low power consumption and some technical solutions that have not been implemented in any chipset before.

However, the Exynos 8895, which powers the Samsung Galaxy S8, took the crown from the Exynos 8890, and now the leadership belongs to the new chip. This processor is already made using 10nm LPE FinFET technology, so its energy efficiency has increased significantly. The chip has a 64-bit architecture and 8 cores: 4 powerful Exynos M2 cores with a frequency of 2.5 GHz and 4 Cortex-A53 cores. It is optimized for machine learning, artificial intelligence, VR glasses and 4K content. The chip also features an ARM Mali-G71 MP20 co-processor with 64 shader cores. This is twice as much as the best GPU of the last generation (Mali-G71).

But let's turn to the "dry" characteristics and compare the performance of these chips. The performance rating of smartphones according to the Antutu benchmark will help us with this. Their official blog published a performance table that is still relevant today (mid-2017), it looks like this:

  1. iPhone 7 Plus (177220 points)
  2. Samsung Galaxy S8+ (172640 points)
  3. Samsung Galaxy S8 (172636 points)

So, in terms of performance, the Exynos 8895 chip is significantly superior to the previous Exynos 8890 processor. It is a completely different matter that it could not overtake a competitor from Apple. It is obvious from the rating that the flagship iPhone 7 Plus with the Apple A10 Fusion processor is gaining more points than the Exynos 8895. But it uses a different software (iOS), which has always been famous for its excellent optimization.

Camera Comparison

With the Galaxy S7 camera, everything is more or less clear. We wrote about it in detail and compared the quality of pictures with photos on iPhone smartphone 7. A good one is used here Sony sensor IMS260, f/1.7 optics, and cool DualPixel focusing technology, thanks to which focus affects every pixel of the matrix.

Examples of photos on the S7 camera

About the Galaxy S8 Camera

Let's lose sight front camera. She did not receive any revolutionary changes. Suffice it to say that its capabilities are more than enough for cool selfies, definitely for Skype.

The rear camera has not received drastic changes. These are the same 12 megapixels, DualPixel focusing technology and a sensor from Sony. But here it applies best processor and overall performance improved. Therefore, the camera now has its own memory, there is a Durst Mode mode in which you can take a dozen frames. The sensor focuses much faster, works with complex scenes (when compared with the Galaxy S7 Edge). The S8 also uses multiframe technology: the phone takes 3 pictures at once and chooses the best one by itself. Some blurry areas of a photo can be replaced with clear areas from another picture. That is, 3 frames taken are glued into a single image, and due to this, high definition is achieved.

The camera has become better, but it cannot be said loudly that this new module takes it to a higher level. The Galaxy S8 camera can be compared to the Galaxy S7 camera. The latter is worse, but not by much.

Pay attention to the last night photo. The dynamic range of the camera is unimaginably wide. Even in complete darkness, clouds in the sky are clearly visible.

autonomy

The battery capacity of smartphones varies. Galaxy S7 is equipped with a 3000 mAh battery, S8 - 3500 mAh. We take into account that the latter has a processor made using 10nm technology and its power consumption is slightly reduced.

Model S7 at maximum load during the day works from morning to night. In the evening, it is advisable to put the phone on charge. You can even watch videos at maximum brightness for 14 hours. Charging up to 100% is carried out within 90 minutes. And 50% of the charge "runs" in just half an hour.

S8 with a 3500 mAh battery can play 18-19 hours of video at maximum brightness. At maximum load, the device will “live” for a whole day, with moderate load - two. There are improvements in terms of autonomy compared to its predecessor (S7), but there is no grandiose breakthrough.

Conclusion and video reviews

The question is not which is better - S7 or S8. The latter is definitely better for the light of its new processor, an unusual new screen, because of which marketers had to introduce a new term (infinity display), as well as increased autonomy and an improved camera.

But that's not all. An iris scanner, a face recognition function - those features that are not in the previous generation of phones. Not even Apple can boast of this. The S8 charges fast, has wireless charging, uses cool sound chips inside, and comes with some cool headphones. There is a DeX mode for working with huge screens, as well as glasses support virtual reality. With the release of S8, Samsung's flagships are perceived differently and abruptly jump to new level. If earlier smartphones from Apple were perceived as something exclusive, today only the Samsung S8 and S8 + are perceived this way.

Please rate this article:

The day before the opening of MWC 2016, Samsung officially unveiled its two newest flagships, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Both of these smartphones bear the mark of an evolution from their predecessors, and our first impressions of them are generally positive.

Design

The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are made of aluminum and have Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on both sides. Plus, they have the same sensors and keys, both of these devices are waterproof and support microSD cards. The two big differences between the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are size and display.

The Galaxy S7 Edge has a 5.5-inch curved display, while the Galaxy S7 has a 5.1-inch flat display. Despite the fact that the S7 Edge is larger than its “brother”, they feel almost the same in the hands.

The S7 Edge should appeal to those who prefer large screens, though the design differences between the two smartphones aren't purely aesthetic. The larger body and curved display of the S7 Edge also offer other features, such as a larger battery.

Display

Both smartphones in question have QHD Super AMOLED displays, and the difference in contrast and brightness is almost minimal. The main difference is in the feature set.

The Galaxy S7's display works like a regular touchscreen, with good responsiveness and vibrant, rich colors. The display of the Galaxy S7 Edge is similar to the S7, but its curved display shapes provide additional functionality.

The sloping edges of the Galaxy S7 Edge display can be used to open shortcuts to favorite apps and contacts, or display news, weather, and more. This time, this smartphone's display has two active columns instead of one to display more information.

If you look at the displays of these devices with a more critical eye, it may seem that the S7 Edge screen is slightly better - due to size and functionality, but mainly due to viewing media content and entering characters. However, the curved edges of the display tend to reflect more light towards the user, a situation that many of us may not like.

Software

Both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge received android version 6.0.1 Marshmallow, paired with the proprietary TouchWiz interface. In principle, this interface is not too different from previous versions TouchWiz is based on Android Lollipop, although the S7 Edge's screen sidebar functionality has been improved. The current version of TouchWiz contains a number of preinstalled applications(about 25), but, with the exception of the additional features of the side panels of the curved display, the software of the devices in question is the same.

Battery

The battery can be considered another significant difference between the S7 and S7 Edge. The battery capacity of the first smartphone is 3000 mAh, the second is 3600 mAh. In our opinion, that extra 20 percent battery capacity might not necessarily mean an extra 20 percent increase in battery life, but given that the S7 Edge has a slightly larger display, it could improve standby battery life. We will have to wait until these two smartphones get to our home so that we can conduct more thorough tests to find out the performance of their batteries.

Camera

The camera technology in the S7 and S7 Edge is almost identical. It is worth noting that they have been improved compared to, and now smartphone data cameras can take better pictures in low light conditions, thanks to dual pixel technology, similar to that found in SLR cameras.

Both devices in question received a 12-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera, with the same f / 1.7 aperture. In our opinion, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ has one of the best cameras on an Android device, and there are some signs that the S7 series will be even better.

Performance

S7 and S7 Edge can demonstrate the same internal "stuffing": Exynos 8890 or Snapdragon 820 chipset (depending on the sales market) and 4 GB random access memory. All of this together guarantees excellent performance, and the S7 Edge's slightly larger display is unlikely to have a noticeable negative impact on performance.

Price

Without a doubt, the Galaxy S7 Edge will be more expensive than its "brother" Galaxy S7. We think the price difference will be around $50-$100, which is a big deal, but that's not surprising given the S7 Edge has more extra features.

Conclusion

Will such additional features bring something special to the new generation of the Galaxy S line? So far, it is difficult to answer this question. For now, all we know is that Samsung has not let down its fans in terms of the hardware of our review heroes, and we expect consumers to be happy with each of these smartphones.

What are your first impressions of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge? Tell us about it in the comments.

Comparison of flagships has already become a kind of tradition, especially since the choice in the upper price segment is limited to Apple and Samsung, other companies and their products only emphasize this, their sales do not even reach a couple of percent of what the two main brands sell on the smartphone market. Having explained why we are comparing these two brands, it's time to say why three devices are involved in the comparison and they formally refer to different generations. The difference in generations is due to the fact that between the release of devices from Samsung and Apple for about half a year, that is, the iPhone 7 is the newest device on the market. If they were released at the same time, then the comparison would be more interesting, since their sales would be synchronized in time, but this does not happen. In February, the next generation of the Galaxy S8 will be released, while the iPhone 8 is still a whole year away. In my opinion, this question should worry pedants or those who have been using the Galaxy S7 / S7 EDGE for some time and want to see what they came up with in the iPhone 7 that is not in their devices.

Since the Galaxy S7/S7 EDGE are actually the same phone, but with different screen sizes, at first glance, you need to compare with the iPhone 7 the younger model - the regular S7. They have comparable case sizes, while the S7 EDGE is noticeably larger, it rather plays against the iPhone 7 Plus. But in terms of cost, these models are comparable, since it is the S7 EDGE that costs about the same as the iPhone 7, and the S7 is cheaper. Therefore, in comparison, two devices from Samsung, since many people proceed not only and not so much from the screen size, but try to find best option in terms of price / quality ratio.

Before proceeding to the comparison, an important caveat must be made. This material deliberately does not give an assessment of the significance of certain parameters, since we all differ greatly in our perception of the world and our needs. Someone thinks that a phone without wireless charging is yesterday, and does not even consider such devices, someone, on the contrary, considers it pampering and denies the need for such technology. This buyer's guide covers all the small and big details, but you can prioritize yourself by choosing what is best for you. Since each person is unique, your priorities will be very different from those of other readers, which means that your choice will be unique in many ways. Go!

Design, body materials, dimensions

The taste and color of all felt-tip pens are different, so discuss appearance models are meaningless, someone likes one thing, someone else. For example, the Galaxy S7 EDGE is unique in its beveled screen edges, no company has analogues to such a solution, the phone can be recognized from afar, which is a rarity these days. But the flip side of this appearance is that the ergonomics of the solution suffers somewhat, there are accidental clicks on these edges of the screen, and not everyone will like it. To some extent, in S7 EDGE, this was a compromise.

Now a few words about the case materials - the iPhone uses an aluminum alloy, and these are not only the side faces, but the entire back surface, on which you can see the inserts for the antennas.

In Samsung, the back wall is made of glass, this is Corning Gorilla Glass 4. In fact, all the colors of the Galaxy play in the light, shimmer, and this is the advantage of using glass. At the same time, unlike metal, they are easily soiled, hand marks easily remain on them. But in Everyday life it's not annoying, not too noticeable.

Apple's response to this was the addition of the Jet Black color (in Russia it is called Black Onyx). This is a polished metal that is very close in perception to Samsung glass panels. Of the minuses, I note that it gets dirty in exactly the same way, but it also scratches easily, so Apple recommends using a protective case for it. Why do you need a beautiful case if you need to immediately hide it in a case? Don't know.

The metal chassis in the Galaxy is made from 7000-series aluminum, which means there is a certain parity here. In general, based on the materials used in the construction, both the iPhone and Galaxy are classified as major league in the phone market, these are the best you can find.

Previously, the iPhone used sapphire glass for the camera window and fingerprint sensor, making scratches almost impossible. In iPhone 7, the use of sapphire crystal was abandoned, and this is a drawback compared to previous generations. Many people have shown in practice that these glasses are scratched. Another thing is that it will still be difficult to do this. IN samsung glass the cameras were originally from Corning, it is difficult to scratch it, there is parity. But the fingerprint sensor is covered with plastic, and you use it dozens of times every day. As a result, within six months it wears out and begins to look untidy.

In the iPhone of previous generations, because of the sapphire, there has never been anything like this, what will happen with the iPhone 7 is not clear, but since there is glass, it is unlikely that it will come to a state similar to the sensor on the S7 / S7 EDGE. For Samsung, this is a weak point.

Another weak point is the speaker grille in colors, where it is painted black. I also had this grill peeled off, exposing white metal.

And if the iPhone can be said that the metal painting is excellent, and the abrasion even after two years looks like it is hardly noticeable, then in the Galaxy individual elements become a weak point. And this is a problem that extends to several generations of devices.

Now a few words about protective glass that covers the screen in these models. Samsung has historically used Corning Gorilla Glass to secure the supply of this key screen component, even buying a part of Corning. Apple uses tempered mineral glass and no changes were made to the seventh generation. As a result, an iPhone that falls from the same height onto asphalt or a hard surface, such as from the waist, usually breaks. Screen replacement is one of the most costly operations and is more likely to happen here than with the Galaxy. Therefore, if you feel or know that the probability of dropping the phone from your hands is high, you need to use protective cases, they protect the devices, but spoil their appearance. With Samsung, this need is not as acute as with the iPhone.

It's time to stop on the size of the phones. There are many people in the world who believe that the smaller the phone, the better. They just don't need big screens, at least not until they try them, after which it becomes impossible to go back to the old small screens. But in terms of compactness, the iPhone 7 is one of the best on the market. Its dimensions are 138.8x67.1x7.1 mm, weight - 138 grams. In the hand lies perfectly, even small for a man's hand.

Galaxy size The S7 is slightly larger, and that's with a noticeably larger screen size (0.4 inches in real life is a striking difference). Phone dimensions - 142.4x69.6x7.9 mm, weight - 152 grams. But the S7 EDGE belongs to the category of phablets, it is not so compact, although it is one of the smallest in its class - 150.9x72.6x7.7 mm, weight 157 grams. Note that the larger size and weight also correlate with the larger battery size in the Galaxy lineup (3000 and 3600 mAh, respectively). In general, both devices are larger than the iPhone 7, but here it is necessary to proceed from your habits. In my opinion, all models are convenient in everyday life, and the same iPhone 7 is too small for me.

Water and dust protection

I specifically singled out this moment separately so that it does not get lost in the text. Previously, water protection was only in the flagships from Samsung, now this option has also been added to the iPhone. The iPhone 7 is IP67, the Galaxy is IP68. Despite the difference, in everyday life it is important to know one thing, that one and the other device will not sink, especially if you quickly get them out of the water. And there, and there the protection function is implemented well.

Display

In recent years, two currents have formed, some - Pentile witnesses - know for sure that on AMOLED screens with QHD resolution their eyes see separate dots, others laugh at them and call them microscope people. The iPhone has always used high-quality IPS matrices that were above the average for the market, but the lag behind Samsung's AMOLED displays was clearly visible in a number of situations, for example, in bright sunlight. It also affected the fact that the screen size in the iPhone is smaller. In terms of screen diagonal, nothing has changed, it's 4.7 inches versus 5.1/5.5 inches. But technologically, the screen in the iPhone 7 has been greatly changed and pulled up to the level of Samsung's AMOLED screens, in practice this is an almost impossible task, however, the display supplier's engineers solved it for Apple. Moreover, it should be noted that a head-on comparison of screens will show that each has its own strengths and weaknesses, which follows from the very technology of their production. But for the first time in the history of the iPhone, its screen in terms of color reproduction, behavior in the sun, the correctness of color reproduction, maximum brightness in the sun is close to or comparable to Samsung AMOLED screens. There is parity between these products.

Traditionally, I want to refer to the most detailed study of screens from Display Mate, in which those who wish can look at graphs, measurements, and the like.

Other things being equal, the difference remains both in the diagonal of the screen and in resolution. In the iPhone, the resolution is traditionally lower, this is done to optimize the performance of the device - 1334x750 pixels, while in the S7/S7 EDGE it is 2560x1440 pixels. It is clear that a larger resolution is better for most tasks, if it does not affect the running time and performance of the solution.

Now there is one more thing that greatly distinguishes these devices. In Samsung, the use of an AMOLED screen allows you to create an AlwaysON function, the display constantly displays information, such as hours, messages, calls. Or your wallpaper. That is, from a dead black screen, the phone turns into something that works. It's hard to underestimate this feature, as your device always looks like it's working, and it hardly affects the battery.

Another option is to automatically adjust the backlight to suit your preferences. For the first two weeks, the phone evaluates how you use it, what kind of backlight you like best. And it adjusts itself just for you, it becomes clearly noticeable after a few days. It would seem a trifle, but this intelligent system allows you to achieve a lot.

I also want to note that the number of display settings is traditionally larger in Samsung, you can customize the device for yourself as comfortably as possible. In the iPhone, everything is much simpler, and there is no flexibility in the settings.

Camera

This is another area where Apple used to settle for above average for most smartphones, but worse than the Galaxy. For the seven, the camera has been heavily redesigned, and plus or minus it has become comparable to the current generation of Galaxy with one difference, in the evening S7 / S7 EDGE shoot a little better. Traditionally for iPhone no manual settings, the “point and shoot” interface, which is far from suitable for everyone, since the machine does not allow you to draw out complex compositions. But at the output, these devices are plus or minus comparable in terms of photography for the layman. If you do not need additional settings, just want to get your phone and take a picture, then both will be fine. If you want to know a little more, then the iPhone won't let you learn it.

I took a number of pictures with both cameras and asked Roman Belykh to compare them. I have no idea who he will prefer, but it does not matter. Both devices play in the same class, they are approximately the same.

Crops (Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE / Apple iPhone 7)

Comparison of photos of Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE and Apple iPhone 7 (Roman Belykh)

Day. Under normal or good lighting conditions (sun or a bright day in the shade), smartphones show about the same picture in terms of detail. The nuance is the processing of photography software: Samsung produces the most “clean”, noise-free frame, while Apple practically does not do this. Therefore, the S7 Edge has all the photos slightly smoothed. By the way, the algorithms work in a similar way on almost all Samsung devices, including S5 and S6. In addition, Samsung slightly overestimate the contrast, which is why in miniature (on the phone, on Twitter, on Instagram) the photos look better. I don’t really like it, however, “the taste and color” ...

Office lighting / home lighting / bar / cafe. The first thing that catches your eye is the incorrect white balance of the Galaxy S7 Edge, the colors become closer to warm. The sharpness is lost, a light “soap” appears. The picture on the iPhone 7 is also distorted, but remains with the correct WB and nice color reproduction. The image is slightly sharper and more contrast.

Insufficient lighting conditions. It seemed to me that Samsung loses a lot to Apple in this test:

  • Get an unblurred frame more often on the iPhone 7
  • White balance is almost always accurate on the iPhone 7, even if it's not exactly accurate, it doesn't go into warm shades
  • Sharpness is slightly better on the iPhone 7, less "soap"

The biggest problem with the Galaxy S7 Edge is dealing with exposure and white balance. As a rule, the photo becomes yellow and overexposed, that is, too light. The HDR Auto feature is probably to blame.

Macro. In the daytime, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge does better macros: sharper and nicer bokeh. In low light conditions, Samsung's advantage is lost a bit, and joins Apple's game with a slightly sharper picture. But in general - parity, both are good.

Total. I would put the Apple iPhone 7 in first place because of the wider dynamic range, better job white balance and less aggressive noise reduction in low light conditions.

Battery

It is impossible to compare the operating time of devices head-on, you can only estimate how long they will last in the same tasks under more or less similar conditions. There are no miracles here, and the iPhone works a little less time compared to the same S7. But most of its use cases are very different, for example, people do not use the maximum backlight, limit the synchronization of applications. As a result, the iPhone 7 can show close battery life, up to one light day.

Of the fat pluses of the S7/S7 EDGE, I would like to note fast charging, it allows you to get a quarter of the battery charge in ten minutes, which is very good. Built-in wireless charging allows you to recharge your phone without any wires in cafes and other places. Here again we see the engineering superiority of the Galaxy over the iPhone. There is simply nothing like this in the iPhone 7.

Performance and stereotypes

It is well known that the iPhone, and any, does not slow down, and Samsung with TouchWiz is a set of jambs and brakes. Unfortunately, with every iOS version the quality of software on the iPhone leaves much to be desired, but TouchWiz, on the contrary, got rid of old sores and works stably and quickly. Both systems are approximately the same in perception, an ordinary person without a stopwatch in his hands will not see any difference. Fans, on the other hand, will foam at the mouth to prove that their phone opens the application faster, and they will even tell you for sure the difference, which will be a split second. But you just need to look at how these devices work with your friends or in stores to form your own opinion - how fast they are for you and whether you need to make them faster, and most importantly, why.

Storage space for your files

It happened, Apple made a basic version of the smartphone with 32 GB, after all, in 2016/2017, 16 GB of memory looked like a mockery. Now there is complete parity, since the S7 / S7 EDGE has the same amount of memory. But it is also possible to install a memory card, and the cards themselves can be any, the main thing is that they are inexpensive. If you do not want to install a memory card, you can install a second SIM card, which has never been possible in the iPhone.

Special Notes

The iPhone 7 got rid of the 3.5 mm jack, now you need to listen to music through an adapter, which is quite inconvenient. In any case, until you get a large number of headphones with a proprietary Lightning connector. At the moment, this connector has no particular advantages. So here the victory is on the side of the Galaxy S7/S7 EDGE, anyway, for now and for me, you may have a different perception of this feature.

Short afterword

I love competition. As soon as iPhone sales began to fall, Apple revised its approach and strengthened the engineering component of its smartphones. They put better and more expensive screens, extended the quality of the camera to the Galaxy level, added water protection. And it's great! Now these products are very close, offer almost the same set of features, and the advantages of the Galaxy over the iPhone have become less. But they are still saved, this is a large battery and, as a result, longer work in different modes, wireless and fast charging, the presence of memory cards, AlwaysOn screen mode. Unfortunately, there's nothing about the iPhone that can be said to be unique in terms of hardware compared to the Galaxy. But, perhaps, now Apple will try to do everything differently here?

I really like how the competition spurred Apple on to make a product at the level of Samsung, the iPhone 7 has become much closer to the Galaxy. So, the choice for you has become more difficult. However, the cost difference remains noticeable. So, in official deliveries, the iPhone 7 is sold from 57 thousand rubles, Galaxy S7 - from 50 thousand, S7 EDGE costs 60 thousand rubles. And on the gray market, the same S7 EDGE can be bought for 40-42 thousand rubles. In a word, there is something to think about and what to choose. Please tell us in the comments what you like about both devices, or maybe you choose a completely different brand. Share why you made this choice.

Apple's new iOS device, the iPhone 7, was officially announced at a recent event, and it naturally sparked the usual heated discussion that surrounds any device from this company. It turned out that the smartphone is actually very similar to its predecessor, but that's not the point. We can't wait to compare the smartphone to its biggest rival, the Samsung Galaxy S7.

We will try to find out the best sides, compare them and draw conclusions about each of these flagship devices.

Galaxy S7 vs iPhone 7: Specs

Galaxy S7 vs iPhone 7: Screen

If we compare the characteristics of both premium devices on paper, then the leader will definitely be the Samsung Galaxy S7.

The South Korean manufacturer has equipped its device with an excellent 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen, which is the best on the market. Apple's decision to keep the display the same size and resolution as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S doesn't bode well, even if it has a wider color gamut this time around.

Yes, the 4.7-inch Retina HD on the iPhone 7 has support for 3D Touch, which will improve the user experience, but if you spend a little more, you get the Galaxy S7 Edge with a 5.5-inch curved screen.

Galaxy S7 vs iPhone 7: Cameras

Only the iPhone 7 Plus received a dual-lens main camera, while the iPhone 7 has a regular 12-megapixel camera. It's 60% faster, 30% more energy efficient, and collects 50% more light than last year's iPhone 6S main camera lens. The 4.7-inch model now has optical image stabilization and a new quad-LED flash.

As for the Galaxy S7, what else is there to say? With amazing low-light performance, optical image stabilization and sophisticated manual mode, this flagship has an incredibly good main camera module.

Galaxy S7 vs. iPhone 7: Processor, Memory, and Color Options

In Russia, Samsung supplies the Galaxy S7 model with an Exynos 8890 processor and 4 GB of RAM on board. The iPhone 7, meanwhile, has a quad-core A10 Fusion chipset that is claimed to be 40% faster than its predecessor. The device is equipped with 2 GB of RAM.

Apple finally got rid of models with 16 GB of user memory. Now you get 32GB of storage as standard, which is what iPhone fans have been waiting for. The company also offers 128GB and 256GB storage options. The starter variant offers 32GB of storage on board, but it also has a slot for memory cards up to 200GB.

Both smartphones are available in four color options. Because the Galaxy S7 is covered in glass, any of the available colors have a glossy finish. In the case of the iPhone 7, you only get one variant that looks similar - "Jet Black". By the way, this is polished and anodized aluminum, not glass.

Galaxy S7 vs iPhone 7: Price

The flagship from Apple in the basic modification will cost you 56,990 rubles, while its competitor from the South Korean company costs 50 thousand rubles. The average iPhone model with 128 GB of internal memory is priced at 65,990 rubles, and the maximum is 74,990 rubles.

conclusions

The new flagships from Samsung and Apple are more alike than ever. They are both waterproof, highly productive and offer incredible good cameras.

The key difference, as it always has been, lies in the operating system. Last update iOS is the largest in the history of the platform. Apple improved user interface, adding a huge number of new features.

Samsung has done a pretty good job new version TouchWiz skins, and the Galaxy S7 are now significantly faster than their predecessors. It is expected that at the end of this year or early next year it will be updated to Android Nougat. Most likely, it will be possible to change the design of icons separately from the theme, as in Galaxy Note 7.

Unlike the S7, the iPhone 7 doesn't have a standard audio jack, but you'll still be able to plug in your old headphones, as Apple bundles a special adapter with every smartphone. Also in the box with the device there are Lightning-headphones, and in the accessories store of the company appeared wireless headset AirPods.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 obviously outperforms its competitor in several areas at once: the screen and the cost. They both have excellent autonomy and performance results.

What would you choose, Galaxy S7 or iPhone 7?
