Why do you need to regularly clean your MacBook from dust?

Dust is a problem with all laptops and computers with active air cooling. If the radiator is clogged, in heavy tasks, be it video processing or games, the chips heat up to 80-90 degrees Celsius.

At such temperatures, thermal paste loses its thermal conductivity properties. Video cards, processor, chipset and bridges heat up more, the fan picks up speed and begins to hum, and the chips burn out due to insufficient heat dissipation.

Cleaning your Mac from dust should be done once a year, at least for the sake of your own comfort of use, not to mention the significant savings of money during subsequent repairs.

In a MacBook, air actively circulates, in which dust particles are present, no matter what clean room you were not, unless of course you work in a sterile laboratory or operating room.

Over time, it settles in layers on the fan blades, which at high speeds leads to imbalance of the bearings and a crackling sound appears, as if an airplane is taking off, and most importantly, it gets clogged between the fins of the radiators, forming a barrier, preventing cold air from penetrating inside and Cool down your MacBook components.

Applications and programs that previously worked quickly begin to slow down and glitch. The processor overheats and resets the operating frequency to the minimum, going into throttling (Throttling is a mechanism for protecting the processor from thermal damage when overheating)

These were the most harmless signs. It is much more serious if the MacBook randomly reboots and turns off. This happens when the temperature reaches 95-105 degrees, so the overheating protection is triggered.

If you do not clean your Mac from dust in a timely manner, the video card, processor, and other components that are not designed for constant operation at high temperatures may fail. According to the rules, you need to clean your Macbook from dust once a year.

Features of the MacBook cooling system.

The air intake slot through which cool air enters the MacBook is located directly under the screen cover. It opens when you open the laptop.

Depending on the model, year of manufacture and screen size of the MacBook, different heat exchangers are installed in them. Basically, in Macs Pro 13 and Air (11, 12, 13), a small, single-section, with one cooler is installed, which simultaneously removes heat from the processor and built-in video card.

The MacBook pro 15 and pro 17 use a two-section design with two coolers, because... The high power of processors and video cards can no longer be cooled with just a radiator.

Cleaning and replacing thermal paste yourself is highly not recommended! Without the necessary instructions, experience and tools, when removing the OS from a MacBook, you run a very high risk of damaging the chips and transistors on the motherboard. Inexpensive preventative cleaning of your MacBook from dust at a service center can quickly and very easily turn into a serious repair, involving soldering or a whole replacement of the motherboard!

What is “Thermal Paste” and why is it needed?

Thermal paste is a substance consisting of many components. It is used between two contacting surfaces (radiator - chip), to remove the air gap between two surfaces.

If in simple language, it is applied to the chip (processor, video card, chipset, bridges) so that the heat they emit is better transferred to the radiator and, accordingly, to the other side, so that the cold radiator cools better, reducing the temperature of the laptop.

Thermal paste, unfortunately, does not last forever and it requires replacement, because... after about a year, maximum two, it dries out, losing all heat-dissipating properties and, accordingly, the MacBook begins to heat up more. Replacing thermal paste on a MacBook using the "PlanetIPhone" service takes 30 minutes.

Cleaning the MacBook keyboard.

Over time, preventive cleaning of the MacBook keyboard is necessary. Otherwise, the keys will stop pressing and will stick due to dirt and dust accumulated under them. This is an inevitable process. Also, cleaning the MacBook keyboard can be done after a small amount of liquid gets in, avoiding its repair. The main thing is to contact the existing malfunction in time for help.

Let's summarize.

If you don't regularly clean your MacBook pro from dust, the cooling fins become clogged and internal components, fail. Cleaning your Mac is necessary at least once a year so that the laptop can serve you for a long time and without failures. At the "PlanetIPhone" service center, cleaning MacBook Air from dust and replacing thermal paste is completed in 30 minutes. You don't have to worry about her condition.

Not long ago, I cleaned my personal MacBook Pro from dirt and dust for the first time. My experience should be useful to those who do not want to trust their favorite device to crooked craftsmen.

My MacBook Pro started to overheat mercilessly

A couple of months ago, my work 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina 2015, which had served faithfully without stopping for about two years, began to heat up mercilessly.

At first I attributed this to the temperature outside the window, which in the summer conditions of the Ukrainian south rarely drops below 40 degrees. However, I also observed overheating under the air conditioner, which was trying to reach the 22-degree mark in the office.

The situation was getting so crazy that I had to close all applications except text editor so that you can at least somehow work.

What reasons for overheating did I personally come up with?

On the websites of many official and not very service centers today there is a note - you need to clean your MacBook Pro at least once a year.

And after talking with familiar specialists from Moscow SCs, I came to the conclusion that minimal prevention needs to be done once every one and a half to two years.

And the problem that I encountered mainly occurs among users who do not hesitate to take the MacBook out of the house. And I worked on materials for the site on the beach, in a gazebo near the house, near the pool, and so on - I didn’t limit myself in any way.

I decided it was time to clean my laptop somehow.

In general, I came to the conclusion that my MacBook Pro was simply full of sand - I simply had no other explanation for the overheating. I decided it was time to clean it.

Since I didn’t need MSC for work then, I started looking for some sane specialists somewhere nearby. It turned out to be not so simple.

And the main problem is that normal specialists asked for a laptop for a couple of days. Of course, our editor-in-chief would not allow me to be out of work for such a period of time. I had to look for another solution - I settled on cleaning it myself.

What you need to clean your MacBook yourself

To carry out minimal maintenance on the MacBook Pro, you need a special screwdriver, which you can look for on AliExpress or from any local dealers.

Please note that the Pentalobe screwdriver, which is designed for the iPhone, does not fit - it is very small. With a strong desire, she can also cope, but all the screws will be licked almost to zero. Search for " screwdriver for MacBook" You need Pentalobe 1.2mmx 25mm.

I found a screwdriver and a small brush from some device of unknown origin. I unscrewed the lid without any additional instructions and just normally cleaned out the dust, hair, sand, etc. (there was even a piece of walnut) - did not unscrew the coolers or change the thermal paste.

The laptop is more alive than dead. Or what in the end

As a result, even after such minimal maintenance, my MacBook Pro, which can no longer be called very new, began to work without any problems at all.

When I unscrewed the laptop, I thought that I would be taking out of it just rags from the dirt. However, everything turned out to be not so sad - at least in my unprofessional opinion.

After the procedure, I came to the conclusion that for an ultra-thin MacBook case, even a minimal amount of debris can be critical. Therefore, I strongly recommend that you buy a screwdriver and at least occasionally just pour sand out of it the way I did.

Users of any laptop model are faced with the problem of dust in the keyboard and or in their PC. Cleaning it is not always easy. A device like a Macbook was very much protected by the company from dust getting into it. It is not even always possible to disassemble it.

Preparing the laptop

To begin any dust cleaning work, including Macbook Pro, you need to turn off the device, and then remove the back cover. For this MacBook you will need to unscrew 10 bolts, but their number may vary for different device models. When unscrewing them, be extremely careful. Don't get lost or confuse them with others.

After completing these operations, remove the cover. The lid is made of aluminum, which makes it pleasant to the touch. On back side the lid shows detailed instructions upon its removal.

To turn off the power system, disconnect the battery cable from the charging port, as well as from the main board.

To ensure that your MacBook Pro is completely cleaned of dust, you need to remove HDD. This should be done extremely carefully, without damaging any of the contents of the laptop.

The system responsible for cooling must be removed and cleaned. Without this step, you cannot clean your MacBook from dirt and dust. After this, you should disconnect the radiator. Now remove the SSD itself. After removing it, you will notice a huge amount of dust that needs to be cleaned.

For cleaning itself you need to use special brushes. In severe cases, a solution is used that removes dirt well, but does not harm the metal.

How to clean your keyboard from dust?

Method 1

If one of the keys sticks, you should not run to a repair shop, because this problem can be corrected yourself. However, for this you need to buy a can of compressed air.

When cleaning with this can, it is important to have a special tube for air distribution. The distance between them should be approximately 1.5 cm.

Turn the laptop 75 degrees and spray air over the keys. This must be done from left to right.

other methods

  1. Shake the keyboard lightly over the trash can. Usually a lot of crumbs and bugs accumulate there. Although in MacBook Pros all this can hardly get there, it’s worth cleaning it this way.
  2. A cotton rag can help you clean, but avoid using synthetics.
  3. You can also use special wet wipes for glass.
  4. You can also take a cotton swab, moisten it with window cleaning solution and clean the keyboard. Then wipe with a dry stick or cloth.

Disinfection

After disinfection, you need to let the keyboard dry for 5–10 minutes.

If you clean your device from dust at least once every 3 months, then your device will work stably. The keyboard should be cleaned once a week. Everything is thought out on MacBooks, and not always a lot of dirt accumulates in them. I would also like to warn you that you need to be careful when using a cylinder and a MacBook. Disinfection should also be carried out regularly, since harmful microbes and bacteria regularly accumulate there. We hope that you have no questions left. But if you have them, then write them in the comments. We will also be grateful for liking and reposting this information to your friends.

If you have noticed that yours has recently become very hot and noisy, the problem is most likely a clogged cooling system. On average, you need to clean your Macbook from dust once a year. And once every 2-3 years it is also advisable to replace the thermal paste.

Overheating problem

One of the MacBook's worst enemies is dust. It gets clogged up in the radiator of the cooling system and the fans cannot cool the radiator because they blow on the dust and not on the radiator grille. The photo below shows an example of a radiator grille clogged with dust, as well as a radiator grille after cleaning (left and right, respectively). Due to overheating, it becomes problematic to work on it - applications that previously worked quickly begin to slow down. And you can’t sit on your knees with him anymore.

Often, due to a large amount of dust, fans begin to crackle. The fact is that during rotation, the cooler blades can touch dust that has gathered into a lump, the structure of which resembles a felt boot. Also, as a result of constant overheating, thermal paste loses its thermal conductivity properties. Because of this, heat from the chips (processor, video chip, chipset) is not efficiently transferred to the radiator, which, in turn, can lead to failure of the chips themselves.

What is thermal paste and why is it needed?

Thermal paste is a special gel-like substance that is “responsible” for removing heat from a chip (processor, video chip, chipset) to a radiator (something like coolant in a car radiator). If the thermal paste dries out, the heat transfer process deteriorates, and the computer, meanwhile, begins to get very hot.

In our work, we use only high-quality thermal pastes Keratherm KP12 or Microsi (official Apple thermal paste). Due to the high thermal conductivity of these thermal pastes, the best results are achieved in reducing the temperature on the processor chip and the entire system as a whole.

Cleaning Macbook from dust at home

No matter how carefully the user handles a laptop or desktop PC, over time the internal components of any computer need to be cleaned. This is necessary for normal operation devices, because dust, dirt and other foreign particles can damage the performance of the computer. Let's take a closer look at how to clean a Macbook yourself at home.

What cleaning products and tools will be needed?

To clean your computer case and components, you will need the following items (purchase them in advance):

Buy 1-2 pairs of thick cleaning gloves. Try not to come into contact with the cleaning products used on your skin, so as not to provoke an allergy;

  • Purchase any cleaning product for office equipment that is sold in a spray bottle. This way it will be easy to distribute over the surface of the PC, without the possibility of excess liquid getting into the case;
  • Dry, clean cloth or napkin. You will need it to clean the screen, keyboard and back cover of the laptop;
  • Brush;
  • Crosshead screwdriver;
  • Thermal paste.

Cleaning the Case

Make sure the device is turned off before performing any actions. Otherwise, while wiping your laptop, you may accidentally launch a program or process. Go to the main menu of MacOS and click on the “Disable” item:

Be sure to unplug the power cable for safety. Do this even if you are just trying to wipe the PC with a dry cloth.

Wipe the screen. Apply a small amount of cleaner to a rag and only then begin to wipe off dust from the computer display from the top to the bottom corner. This way you won't leave unsightly stripes and stains.

Note! A microfiber cloth is best for cleaning the display and the entire computer case. It does not collect static and does not leave small fluff on the screen.

If necessary, clean the keyboard and computer case. To remove crumbs and dust particles from the sides of the buttons, we recommend using a small paint brush. It perfectly “sweeps away” all the dirt, making the keyboard new and clean. Using the same brush you can clean the connectors.

Do not use any cleaning products to clean the trackpad. This may interfere with its coverage and mouse responsiveness. After cleaning the external components of your PC, you can move on to removing dust from the hardware components.

Cleaning the cooler and replacing thermal paste

Cleaning a Macbook also involves removing dust bunnies from the cooler and replacing thermal paste. To open the case, first turn off the laptop and turn off the power. Then remove the battery.

Remember, to speed up your computer you should also pay attention to file system computer. To optimize your work, you additionally need to clean up unnecessary files and check the security of your PC using an antivirus.

To open the case, use a Phillips screwdriver and a six-pointed star screwdriver. To open the back cover, unscrew all the screws one by one. back cover computer. Please note that they are all different, so try to arrange them in such a way that you will not forget their location later.

Open the lid and set it aside. Now, using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the screws that hold each of the coolers and remove the fans. Open their lid and clean them without using liquid. You can take a regular brush.

Also, wipe the inside of the computer lid with a dry cloth. Replace the thermal paste by carefully applying it to the area around the fan blades. Build your PC and launch it. After cleaning, the computer should stop heating up, turn off spontaneously, or slow down.
