Of course, there may be other reasons why flash drives simply “die”.

One point needs to be clarified here. It happens that the flash drive really “dies”. In this case, it cannot be restored. At least at home. But if USB stick, when connected to a computer, it shows at least some signs of life, then you can try to restore its operation with the controller firmware.

What are the signs of USB drive life?

• When you connect a flash drive to a computer, the computer gives a signal about connecting the device - it's already good.
• At Windows connection ask to format a removable drive (but there are problems and errors during the formatting process such as “Windows cannot complete formatting”).
• The flash drive is detected and visible in the explorer, but when you try to open it, the message “Insert disk ...” appears
• Errors occur when copying information.

If the information is very valuable, then it is better not to do anything on your own so as not to make things worse. Contact special service centers that deal with data recovery.

Let's now look at the whole controller firmware process using a real example, using my flash drive as an example. Kingston DataTraveler Elite 3.0 16GB. I have this flash drive broke generally interesting. I had to upload files to it and delete those that had already been recorded. I connected it to the computer, began to delete the folder. But the Folder was deleted very slowly. I disconnected and reconnected this flash drive, an inscription appeared that the disk must be formatted “Before using the disk ...”.

Since there were no Important files on the flash drive, I started formatting without hesitation.

But the process itself lasted a very long time and never ended, I forcibly stopped it. The message “Windows could not complete formatting” may also appear.

But still, I formatted it, since the tenth time and only in FAT 32. After that, the USB drive was normally defined and I was even delighted. But it was not there. I started copying files to it, and the recording speed was about 100 kb / s. I decided to flash it, which I did.

Determine the VID and PID of the USB controller

To start we need determine VID and PID. This is data about the model and manufacturer of the controller, which is in our drive. Based on this data, we will look for a firmware utility. Connect the flash drive to the computer and run Flash program Drive Information Extractor (extract the folder with the program from the archive and run the GetFlashInfo.exe file).

Click the button at the top of the program “Get flash drive data”.

The program will give us the result. We look at the information that is opposite the VID and PID.

You can copy these numbers, or leave the utility window open, we will need the data now.

According to the VID and PID data, we need to find a utility with which we will flash the controller. There is a good site flashboot.ru, which contains a database of flash drives and utilities for their recovery.

In the search results, we are looking for a flash drive similar to ours. The list may include devices from other manufacturers. They just have the same controller, it was determined by VID and PID. You may have noticed that I have a 16 GB flash drive, and in the list I have allocated 32 GB. I don't think there's anything wrong with that (just where the name of the utility is not indicated on 16 GB). You try to choose a more similar device from the list.

We are interested in the field UTILS(utility), copy its name, completely.

Unfortunately, the utility I needed was not found on this site. Perhaps you will be more lucky and you will see something in the search results. Download the utility to your computer.

But I did not stop there and started to google. I just asked “SK6221 MPTool 2013-04-25” and found this utility on some other site. If you have the same flash drive, then this utility is. True, the name of the archive is different, but this did not stop me from successfully curing my flash drive.

USB drive recovery process

Turn off your flash drive. Extract the utility folder from the archive and run .exe file. In my case, this is the MPTool.exe file. See also text file readme.txt. Perhaps there is an instruction, or a link to a site with instructions. If the instruction is in English, then translate it using the same translate.google.ru.

I'll tell you how I did (it’s just that you may have a different utility and everything may be different there, but it should not be very different).

The utility is running. We connect the flash drive. I have information about the flash drive in two lines in the program. We press the button start. In my case, the yellow bar signaled the firmware process. We wait.

When the process ended, I saw a green color, everything seems to be fine.

A Windows message should immediately appear prompting you to format the drive. But the first time, it probably won't work. Unplug the flash drive and plug it back in. The driver should install and the removable drive should appear in File Explorer. You can format it.

I checked the write speed, everything is as it should be for USB 3.0, everything is fine!

You must be prepared for the fact that the actions may differ from those that I described. And not everything can work out the first time. The main thing is not to give up and everything will work out!

How to restore a Silicon Power flash drive

In our world, almost everything breaks, and Silicon Power flash drives are no exception. The crack is very easy to spot. In some cases, some files begin to disappear from your media. Sometimes the drive simply stops being detected by a computer or any other device (it happens that it is detected by a computer, but not detected by a phone, or vice versa). Also, a memory card can be detected, but not opened, and so on.

In any case, it is necessary to restore the flash drive so that it can be used again. Unfortunately, in most cases you will not be able to recover any information and it will be permanently deleted. But after that, the USB-drive can again be fully used and write information to it without fear that it will be lost somewhere. It is worth noting that very rarely, after recovery, removable media from Silicon Power last a long time, they still have to be changed.

You can restore Silicon Power removable media using the programs that the company itself has released. Apart from this, there are other software that helps in this matter. We will analyze proven methods that have been tested by users from all over the world.

Method 1: Silicon Power Recovery Tool

The first and most famous utility from Silicon power. She has only one purpose - to fix damaged flash drives. Silicon Power Recover Tool works with removable media with Innostor IS903, IS902 and IS902E, IS916EN and IS9162 series controllers. Its use is extremely simple and looks like this:

Download the utility, open the archive. Then open the folder " AI Recovery V2.0.8.20SP” and run the RecoveryTool.exe file from it.

Insert your damaged flash drive. When the utility is launched, it should automatically detect it and display it in the box below " device". If this does not happen, choose it yourself. Try restarting Silicon Power Recover Tool a few times if the drive still doesn't show up. If all else fails, then your media is not suitable for this program and you need to use another one. Method 2: SP ToolBox

The second proprietary program, which includes as many as 7 tools. We only need two of them. To use Silicon Power ToolBox to recover your media, do the following:

After that, the archive with the program we need will be downloaded. There is only one file in it, so open the archive and run it. Install SP ToolBox and launch it using a shortcut. Insert the flash drive and select it where it originally says " No device". Run diagnostics first. Method 3: SP USB Flash Drive Recovery Software

The purpose of this service is to find desired program and use it to recover the flash drive. The search is carried out according to such parameters as VID And PID. So, USB Flash Drive Recovery independently determines these parameters and finds the right program on the Silicon Power servers. Using it looks like this:

Download USB Flash Drive Recovery from the company's official website. This is done in exactly the same way as in the case of the SP ToolBox. Only if the system requires authorization again, remember that after registration you should have received a password by mail, which you need to use to enter the system. After authorization, download the archive, open it, then several times open the only folder that you will see on the screen (one folder to another). Finally, when you get to the destination folder, run the file " SP Recovery Utility.exe».

Then everything happens completely in automatic mode. First, the computer is scanned for a Silicon Power flash drive. If one is found, USB Flash Drive Recovery determines its parameters (VID and PID). Then she searches the servers for a suitable recovery program, downloads it and launches it. You just have to click on the desired button. Most likely, the downloaded program will look like the one shown in the image below. If so, just click on the "Recover" button and wait for the end of the recovery.

If nothing happens and all the above processes are not running, perform them manually. If the scan does not start, which is very unlikely, check the box next to the inscription " Scan Device Information". The field on the right will start showing relevant information about the ongoing process. Then check the box next to " Download Recovery Tool Kit” and wait while the program downloads. Then unzip the archive - this is the mark " Tool Kit" and use it, that is, run - " Execution Tool Kit". Next, the recovery utility will start.

Using this tool also does not make it possible to save the data contained in the memory of the drive.

Method 4: SMI MPTool

This program works with Silicon Motion controllers found in most Silicon Power flash drives. SMI MPTool differs in that it performs low-level recovery of damaged media. You can use it in the following way:

Click on the button " Scan USB" to start scanning your computer for a suitable flash drive. After that, your media should be displayed on one of the ports (column " Items» on the left). Click on it in this column to highlight it. Actually, if nothing happens, then the program does not suit your carrier.

Now click the " start” and wait for the restoration to finish.

In some cases, it helps if you do the above steps several times. In any case, it's worth a try. But, again, do not rely on saving data.

Method 5: Recuva File Recovery

Finally, we have reached a method that allows you to restore at least part of the damaged information. Only then it will be possible to deal with the restoration of the device itself using one of the utilities described above. Recuva File Recovery is not SP's own development, but for some reason it is located on the official website of this company. It is worth saying that this is not the same program familiar to all of us. All this only means that Recuva will be the most effective in working with flash drives from Silicon Power.

Only when you choose where to scan for deleted or corrupted files, choose the option " On my media card” (this is step 2). If the card is not detected or no files are found on it, start the whole process again. Now select the option " In a specific location” and specify your removable media according to its drive letter. By the way, you can find it if you go to " My computer" (or just "Computer", "This PC" - it all depends on the version of Windows).

After that, the scanning process will begin. In the largest field you can see all files and folders available for recovery. On the left are two more fields - the results of fast and deep scans. After the recovery of lost data has been completed, use one of the above utilities to restore the entire drive to working order. You can also use the standard Windows tool to check disks and fix their errors.

Finally, you can format your removable media using other programs or the same standard means Windows. As for the latter, you need to do the following:
