In short, newer firmware requires new version bootloader, old - accordingly, the older one. If this condition is not met, the smartphone will be overwritten. special section(EFS), which contains Phone IMEI, due to which the smartphone cannot use cellular network and turns into a tablet. As a solution, either restore the EFS partition (if, of course, you took care of the backup in advance), or flash a special modem that does not require IMEI (an anonymous person’s dream, no less), or change the board itself at a service center for a lot of money.

In my case, I already had the latest available official firmware 4.4 installed, so the bootloader version was also “fresh”. That is, I shouldn’t have installed older firmware versions, but I didn’t intend to.

So let's get started.

In short, the whole process can be divided into the following stages

1) Flash the recovery

2) Make a full backup

3) Flash the required firmware

But it's worth spending a little time preparing.

0. Preparatory work

During the flashing process, we will need several things that are best taken care of in advance.

Odin– a special program for flashing smartphones; it will have to be installed on your computer.

Drivers for a smartphone - it is recommended to use the latest available version.

Both Odin and the drivers are easy to find in the header.

Custom recovery. If I understand correctly, there are only two favorites here: TWRP and PhilZ-touch. I will use . Since I am going to flash the recovery via Odin, I will need a .tar recovery file.

Custom firmware. The choice here is simply huge. I decided for myself that it’s worth flashing either to MIUI because of the beautiful and well-thought-out interface, or to CyanogenMOD 12 (because today this is the only available Lollipop firmware for Note 2, while in stock Android I’m only attracted to Material design), or on Ditto Note, where most of the updated features of the new TouchWiz and new generations were ported Galaxy Note. But this, of course, is a matter of taste.

And, of course, a computer with Windows and a micro-USB cable.

1. Recovery

Recovery – special utility program, which allows you to install firmware on your smartphone, and also performs a number of other important actions such as creating backups and cleaning unnecessary data. By and large, a smartphone always already has recovery, but its capabilities are very limited by the manufacturer. Therefore we will need modified recovery. As I already said, I chose TWRP. Hopefully you have already downloaded the required .tar file.

So, turn off the phone, and then turn it on by simultaneously pressing the volume down key, the center key and, in fact, the power button. A warning message will appear about the dangers of modified firmware, but we have already decided everything, so we press the volume up - and the smartphone goes into firmware mode.

Now run Odin as administrator and connect the smartphone to the computer. There is an opinion that starting from Windows 7 it is not necessary to install drivers separately - supposedly they are found automatically. From my point of view, it would be a good idea to install them separately - it won’t take much time.

Odin will happily report that the phone has been found, and the port number to which the smartphone is connected will appear in the upper left corner. On the port number Odin will report that in this moment happens with a smartphone and what is the result of this or that operation. On the right side, select the AP button (this is if you are using Odin 3.09, in version 3.07 this same button is called PDA) and select the recovery file. Let me remind you once again that we need exactly the .tar file.

And click Start.

When the process is completed, the phone will automatically reboot. However, this is an option - the corresponding checkbox in the Odin settings can be disabled.

The important point is that on the first reboot, the standard recovery overwrites all other, therefore it is extremely important to hold down the volume key combination when rebooting up, central key, power button (this is the standard key combination for TWRP, it may differ for other recovery). Release the keys when the model name appears on the screen. After this, TWRP should load, which will independently make the necessary changes so that the standard recovery does not overwrite anything else. If it doesn’t work out immediately after the first reboot, it will boot into TWRP, you’ll have to flash it through Odin one more time.

In principle, TWRP can be installed using only the capabilities of a smartphone, but you will need a terminal and root. Instructions on – last section “dd Install method”.

1.1. If you need root access on the original firmware.

To be honest, I never really understood why root is in real life. Here are the geeks - yes, for them rooting the phone is the first thing, they don’t have it Titanium backup does not work. For myself, I just can’t figure out why I need it in real life. Well, for example, if you decide to install a custom recovery not through Odin.

But I haven’t tried this method, so I can’t tell you anything more.

2. Make a backup

The most important thing to do after installation custom recovery– backup, especially the EFS partition. This is the same section where the phone's IMEI is stored. Its backup is done once, and the result is stored in a safe place. But if you often experiment with firmware, then nothing prevents you from including an EFS partition in the backup every time.



Be sure to select before starting the backup so that the result is saved not to the internal memory, but to the memory card. Most firmware requires you to first delete all data from internal memory during installation, which will be fatal for backups. Before starting a backup, you can also choose what to include in it. As a first backup, I highlighted all the available options. But if I understand correctly, only EFS is not restored by the new firmware.

After completing the backup, I connected the smartphone to the computer and copied the resulting backup to a safe place, and copied the firmware file to the SD card.

3. Custom firmware

The firmware can be flashed either from a computer via Odin, or directly from a smartphone via recovery. Just pay attention that for firmware via Odin you will need .tar file, whereas through recovery you need to flash .zip.



I chose the firmware for installation, which is being actively developed by the Forum user. main feature firmware - updated TouchWiz interface and ported proprietary features from Note 3 and Note 4. I flashed it through recovery.

To do this, turn off the smartphone, and then turn it on by holding down the volume up, center and power buttons. As soon as the model name appears on the screen, you can release it. After this, the smartphone will boot into recovery TWRP. Before starting the installation, it would be a good idea to make a Wipe in the section of the same name. Wipe in most cases is the key to stability custom firmware, so in some firmware there is an option to make a Wipe before installation - the so-called “ clean install” – clean install.

4. Instead of a conclusion

The entire firmware process took, at most, half an hour. As a result, my Galaxy Note 2 has been transformed, receiving an updated TouchWiz interface with all the basic programs and, if not all, then most of the new proprietary tools that make working with the pen much more convenient.

I don’t see random application crashes like I had on the stock firmware. The phone stopped rebooting on its own. Otherwise, no major changes. I was hoping that the batteries would be better, but this issue remains unchanged. True, this firmware has root by default, which means you can use special programs to find out which applications are to blame for the increased consumption (the root will come in handy, yes).
