That is why, even under ideal conditions, the data transfer speed from one device to another will be 2-3 times lower than the theoretical one (the one indicated on the box), depending on the class of the device. For more than a year now I have been using a fanless mini computer (with a passive cooling system) from Hystou on Core i5. I am very pleased with the computer, after time it still works well and fully satisfies my needs. , if anyone is interested. Almost the only drawback for me initially was the weak WiFi module and the lack of support for the 802.11 ac standard. The computer has a combined WiFi + Bluetooth module Broadcom BCM94313HMGB, which is connected via PCI-E.

It only works in the 2.4Ghz range, and besides, it does not have the best sensitivity; in the next room the speed already drops noticeably. And this is even despite the remote antennas. In general, I then thought that I would temporarily use it, and then buy something with support for 802.11 ac on Ali, since there is plenty to choose from. But as you know, there is nothing more permanent than temporary. My friend prompted me to buy it because he highly praised this adapter. The asking price was only $5, so I ordered it without hesitation.

The Wifi adapter is in a transparent package. Inside there is a cardboard insert that states that it supports the IEEE 802.11ac standard and can operate in two bands 2.4Ghz/5Ghz. The specified speed is 600 Mbps.


On the reverse side you can already read the detailed characteristics and here it becomes clear where the 600 Mbps figure comes from. The Chinese simply added up the speeds in two ranges :) If taken separately, then in the AC standard the speed will be up to 433 Mbps, and in the N standard - up to 150 Mbps.

Well, actually what I took it for was speed. My computer is in the room next to the router and because of the wall the speed drops a little. On the old WiFi module, the maximum I could get was 45 - 48 Mbps. And that's the maximum. Often channels intersect with neighboring ones and the speed drops to 20 - 25 Mbps.


This, of course, is obscenity, especially considering that I have a tariff plan of up to 200 Mbps and a modern dual-band router Mi Router 4. There is not a single soul in the 5 Ghz range, all channels are free. In general, I connect the adapter and do another speed test - 168 Mbps.


The speed has increased by at least 3.5 times, and the connection has become more stable. Now my neighbors don't bother me and I can enjoy the benefits of my tariff plan:) As of today, I have been using the adapter for 3 weeks and during my use I have not had any comments. In general, I got exactly what I expected. Now the PCI-E slot is also free on the computer.

Long range Wi-Fi standard 802.11ac might be considered the most compelling reason to retool. But in order for the end device to benefit from both this characteristic and the high speed, it is necessary to upgrade to the 802.11ac standard. The easiest way to do this is with USB adapters.

To do this, deactivate the old adapter by going to “Control Panel | Network Control Center and shared access| Change adapter settings". Right-click on the appropriate adapter and select “Disable”. After that, insert the new adapter into the PC’s USB port and install the drivers.

If your computer only has USB 2.0 interfaces, it is better to choose Wi-Fi module 802.11ac connected to the PCIe bus in the PC to avoid problems. For the most part, laptops are relatively easy to replace the built-in WLAN adapter with a better one. new model. However, there is a problem here, which is that the antennas built into the laptop must support the 5 GHz WLAN band, which is often only the case with expensive high-end solutions. Universal option: USB adapter

Many manufacturers offer USB adapters supporting the WLAN standard: we tested four of them (three with USB 3.0 and one with USB 2.0). The best-proven device is the Netgear A6210 with two AC channels (nominally 866 Mbps), in which the bulky folding antenna plays a significant role.

A USB extender with a stand is also useful, with which you can position the A6210 so that the signal is received most efficiently. Netgear's device is, on average, faster than other WLAN modules tested. Comparable power is provided by Asus's USB-AC56 adapter with its external folding and rotating antennas.

The slowest in testing was the tiny D-Link DWA-171, which has only one AC channel (nominally 433 Mbit/s) and only USB 2.0, which hardly allows it to outperform a WLAN adapter of the “n” standard (nominally 300 Mbit/s). /With). Close-range measurements clearly show how USB 2.0 slows down data transfer. However, given the compactness and low price, we can assume that the power is normal. For long range, you will need a larger device with a wider range of settings.


Professional: expansion boards

It is optimal to connect a PC to a router via a gigabit LAN. However, if the cable gets in the way too much, a good alternative could be a WLAN-ac expansion card, which at normal “in-house” distances will not require big compromises in terms of connection speed and stability.

Compared to a USB device, the expansion card can also work in a PC with USB 2.0 without loss of speed, without taking up scarce USB ports 3.0 on newer PCs. Both boards we tested correspond in size to PCI-Express slot, which can be found on PCs no older than 10 years. They work with large external antennas that can be optimally positioned thanks to the long cable.

Unlike Intel boards AC-7260, model Asus PCE-AC68 is an expansion card for a desktop PC in its purest form. This solution can turn its advantage of having three AC channels (nominally 1300 Mbps) into impressive data transfer speeds only at a distance of 5 meters and within line of sight. For such a short distance, running a LAN cable is probably a more practical and cheaper option. In our test (ten meters, over a wall), the speed dropped significantly.


The Intel AC-7260 adapter showed more stable results. Wherein we're talking about about a small PCIe module for installation in a laptop, which Intel ships complete with an adapter card for desktop PCs and an external antenna. At close range, the module with a nominal speed of 866 Mbps does not provide the same high-speed data transfer as the Asus model, but over long distances it demonstrated much greater stability and earned our recommendation for use in desktop PCs.

If you want to convert your laptop to the Wi-Fi 802.11ac standard, buying an Intel AC-7260 PCIe Mini Card without a desktop PC conversion card for about 2,000 rubles is also a smart option. Besides it, the only thing left is the slower Intel AC-3160 model.
